Trataka- The Third Eye Opener For Visual Integration

Trataka, one of the six cleansing methodologies of Yoga, is the practice of looking intently with an unwavering gaze at a small point like a black dot, a candle flame, or a small object until tears are shed. Then closing the eyes, he needs to pay attention to the afterimage.  The breathing exercises that aid the procedure bring in more space for attention and calmness.

trataka for visual integration

Kundalini Yoga, the concept of dharma considers the pineal gland to be the third eye of humankind. The control of the blink reflex can stimulate the pineal gland. Trataka improves the concentration and moreover have proved to be bringing marvelous results in the visual integration. There have been clinical experiments and analysis whose results prove the role of trataka in improving the visual concentration.

Trataka is said to be a solution for all of the eye problems, as said in Hatha Yoga Pradipika. Trataka eradicates fatigue and closes the entire doorway to the problems that affect the eyes. It also has the effect of improving or correcting the short-sightedness. Eyes are considered as the doorways to the mind. The mind becomes fixed and unmoving with ceased and deepened thoughts when eyes concentrate on the point. It brings in a whole new level of energy, calmness, and relaxation by avoiding the anxiety and tensions. We are not all visual people, but practicing this technique will improve that sense. Trataka, when practiced every morning as a part of the meditation for a considerable amount of time, can bring in the momentum for a fresh start each day.

Not all the proceedings are meant to be general for all, but instead, each individual needs specially categorized chart of procedures and treatments. We, at Jeevaniyam, care to do the same. YOGA: THE KEY TO VESTIBULAR INTEGRATION

Vestibular integration is one of the important senses for a human and it is one of the earliest developed senses for a fetus. The vestibular system in the inner ear maintains the balance of the body and it helps to maintain the equilibrium and balance of body posture. But, at times, the senses do not get integrated well, as in the cases of vertigo causing many issues to lead a normal, healthy life.
yoga and vestibular integration

But not to worry when there are effective solutions for the same problems right here in our own culture and soil. Yoga, more than being a physical, mental, and spiritual discipline, it is a lifestyle which has the key to solve most of the problems. Yoga in general increases the muscle flexibility improves the energy, maintains a balanced metabolism and protects from injury.

yoga and vestibular integration

People with sensory issues especially those facing vestibular integration find it really hard and difficult to do yoga just because they are afraid of collapsing while performing it. But, the reality is the other way round. Even though initially they may find it difficult to do the yoga postures, Yoga provides you with many poses and exercises to build better balance and thus to solve the sensory integration issues.  Vrksasana, tadasana, utkasana, garudasana are few of the poses that help you gain better control over the body. When the body balance gets improved, it naturally increases the confidence too. Fast paced vinyasa have to be avoided and instead, enough time must be given to set the postures, moving from one to another posture. Yoga blocks and props if used can improve the stability of the body. The breathing exercises improve the ability of the brain to unite with the mind setting it free and clear.

Yoga when practiced along with the medications, have proved to be producing tremendous change and bringing out inspiring steps.

BRAHMI : THE SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN HIGHER MENTAL FUNCTIONING

Brahmi, scientifically Bacopa Monnieri, natural nootropic, one of the boons of Ayurveda is highly effective in supporting focus, cognition, memory, increasing communication between neurons and reducing anxiety & stress. Modern researchers have clearly mentioned about the role of Brahmi as a treatment in several neurological diseases including epilepsy, dementia, schizophrenia, and Alzheimer's disease.

http://jeevaniyam.in/

Active constituents in Brahmi include alkaloids, sterols, saponins, stigmasterol, beta-sitosterol etc. The most important alkaloids present in Brahmi are brahmine, nicotinine, and herpestine. The bacosides present in Brahmi have an anti-depressant activity.

The Brahmi not only affects the brain but also helps in:

    • promoting liver health
    • protection against neonatal hypoglycemia
    • cures systemic redness and swelling
    • maintains normal blood pressure
    • strong antioxidant activity.

Brahmi has a significant role in bringing the 3 neurotransmitters, serotonin, dopamine and GABA into balance. It also increases the production of acetylcholine, which is helpful for memory and learning. Parkinson’s disease affecting the production of dopamine can be brought into control using Brahmi’s role in balancing dopamine and discouraging neural degeneration. Brahmi also has a significant role in improving the neuronal networking thus improving the higher mental functioning.

http://jeevaniyam.in/

Even though Brahmi is a cure, sometimes, when taken at inappropriate levels causes many side effects which are not so welcoming. If the dosage of Brahmi is too large for a particular individual, it may cause a headache. Brahmi also has the power of relaxing the nervous system. But if the level of intake of Brahmi increases it can even lead to the loss of consciousness. Brahmi is not advised in people with low heart rate conditions, bradycardia. The gut-brain theory explains the disorientation of brain due to gut issues and vice versa. Hence, any issue related to the brain cannot just be cured by Brahmi, instead, the root cause of the problem has to be sought out. Also, any gut problem if prevalent has to be cured first. Brahmi, when used in the ample quantity in the right proportions can help the higher order mental functioning thus bringing the balance of the mind and the brain.

AYURVEDA FOR GASTRIC PROBLEM IN AUTISM

Autism refers to a range of conditions that manifests as challenges with social skills, speech, and nonverbal communication, repetitive behaviors etc. Autism is a lifelong problem with a number of possible causes, including genetic problems or syndromes, severe infections that affect the brain like meningitis, celiac disease, encephalitis or exposure to toxins or illness during pregnancy (rubella, chemicals, etc.).

Ayurvedic medicine is respected as one of the world’s oldest and original organized study of medicine. Ayurvedic medicine utilizes a combination of specialized diets, herbs, yoga and massage to assist with the management of autism. Jeevaniyam patients afflicted with autism have demonstrated significant improvements through a series of treatments, including food elimination, sensitivity testing, herbal supplementation, yoga and social normalization. As a cure for autism has yet to be determined, management of the condition using Ayurvedic practices has demonstrated to be effective in supporting autistic patients in becoming functional in managing various symptoms of this condition.

Children with Autism usually exhibit gastrointestinal (GI) distress. They often have deficiencies of beneficial intestinal microbes, leading to inflammation or immune dysfunction, food intolerance, malabsorption, gas, constipation, bloating, diarrhea etc. Unfortunately, assessment of GI distress—and therefore treatment—can be complicated among ASD children due to communication difficulties. Further, ASD children may also exhibit food selectivity, which may further affect GI symptoms. Children with ASD have nutritional deficiencies that can lead to immunological and neurological problems. These GI symptoms, particularly constipation, gas, and bloating, may cause children to feel early satiety, which may affect food choice. The discomfort may also affect behavior and the ability to focus on other subjects.

This communication between the endocrine and nervous systems is thought to be involved in many regular functions and systems within the healthy body as well as in many diseases. Stress has been shown to cause increased intestinal permeability, causing gut bacteria to move into the systemic circulation, as well as organs such as the spleen, liver and mesenteric lymph nodes. Jeevaniyam believes that the serene connection between brain and your gut is important to be well maintained so as to be fit both mentally and physically. So, it is obvious and important to maintain the equilibrium and balance of gastrointestinal tract, especially in autistic patients.

At Jeevaniyam, the gut problem is treated promptly and is highly significant in the management of gut discomforts among the special kids. Ayurvedic teachings tell us that during the formation of bone or asthi dhatu, spaces are created within bones. These spaces are filled with nourishing tissues of media or fat which help in the formation of majja or bone marrow. The right balance between Masaharu and majjadhatu is the key to the right balance between gut and brain. Dhatus are tissues formed during the growth of human body and it is the basic balance of this dhatus that help to maintain the health of the body.

Some, or all, of these digestive issues, may be avoided by eliminating certain combination of foodstuff. Jeevaniyam recommends other digestive support for autistic children can be found through the use of a variety of digestive herbs, including:

  • Ginger
  • Long Pepper
  • Black Pepper

A mix of long pepper, ginger, and black pepper to accelerate the production of digestive enzymes and the absorption of essential nutrients called Trikatu.
In addition to this, autistic children’s digestive disorders may be prevented through the use of naturally occurring probiotic flora; most often found in raw organic foods, high-quality, all-natural multi-strain probiotic supplements or fermented vegetables like sauerkraut and kimchi.

Ayurvedic external treatments like Oleation (Snehana), powder massage regulates Rasadhatu and corrects the mental functions. Customized diet, yoga, treatment on the skin shows remarkable changes in the behavioral disorders of autistic kids. Gut problems being a cause for the physical violence in children, solving them can cause a lot of betterment in them. Ayurvedic treatments help the special kids lead confident lifestyle without worrying about their gut problems.

SENSORY INTEGRATION: WITH LOVE, FROM JEEVANIYAM

Sensory Integration is the process by which the signals from the senses of the body is sent to the brain and then processed to make out effective sensory information that could result to help the person do his/her acts accordingly. For most of the people, the development of sensory integration occurs when we are young as part of our normal development and in the things we do such as rolling, crawling, walking and in play; for others, sensory integration is less well developed- which causes the defects in the overall development too.

In sensor integration, 8 senses are being considered. In addition to the 5 basic senses of vision, touch, smell, taste, and hearing, 3 more sensations are included in sensory integration.

1. Proprioception

The tiny sensory receptors present in the muscles and joints to determine and calculate the positions and movements of the body parts. The brain then uses this information to plan movements so that the movements of the body could be coordinated.

2. Vestibular

Receptors present in the small, fluid-filled canals called vestibules in the inner ear helps to pick up the direction of movement and help brain understand the changes. The brain uses this information to plan for movements and helps to maintain the overall balance of the body.

3. Interoception

This is a fairly new area for discussion and concern in sensory integration; interoception is how our body tells our brain about the environment inside the body, when our body is hungry or feeling full, when the heart is beating at a fast pace or when we have a sensation of butterflies in our stomach.

Sensory processing disorder (SPD; also known as sensory integration dysfunction) is the condition that exists when the multi-sensory integration does not adequately get processed in order to provide appropriate responses to the demands of the environment.

1. Sensory Modulation Disorder (SMD)

It deals with the difficulties in processing the degree of intensity, duration, frequency, duration, complexity, and novelty of the sensory stimuli. It can be an overreacting, or under- reacting or seeking.

2. Sensory-based motor disorder (SBMD)

It shows motor output that is disorganized as a result of incorrect processing of sensory information affecting postural control challenges.

3. Sensory discrimination disorder (SDD)

Sensory discrimination disorder involves the incorrect processing of sensory information. Incorrect processing of visual or auditory input, for example, may be seen in inattentiveness, disorganization, and poor school performance.

Sensory integration therapy helps kids overcome the shortcomings they face due to the SID by exposing them to sensory stimulation in a structured, repetitive way allowing the brain to adapt thereby allowing kids to process and react to sensations more efficiently. Occupational Therapist (OTs) decide the structure, plan, and course of the treatment to be provided to each kid in a way specially designed for him/her. It includes not only things like balance treatments, movement therapy and structured exposure to sensory input, but also carefully designed and tailored physical activities and accommodations.

Jeevaniyam with its panel of OTs working hard and efficient to help each kid with SID to overcome the difficulties and worries faced and also to cast them to fit perfect by breaching the social curb. We aim at bringing the children out of their vain via activities and therapies that are of fun and excitement helping the child recover unconsciously.

We, at Jeevaniyam, help parents understand the seriousness and graveness of the situation of their children by creating awareness among them via special talk sessions between our team and the parents. Our team also is well versed to train the parents to treat the children with SID at home and also to help their children with the therapy. Even though our therapy session at Jeevaniyam lasts for around a couple of weeks or more, SI therapy needs to be carried over into the home and in school in what’s most often called a “sensory diet” and we do take enough care to make the follow up of the kid’s betterment each day.
Sensory Integration therapy has also found to be effective and result- making in kids suffering from autism. Jeevaniyam has witnessed numerous cases of improvement for the autistic patients via Sensory Integration therapy by now. The rationale is that by changing how sensations are processed by the brain, we help children with autism make better sense of the information they receive and use it to better participate in everyday tasks.

The SI therapy helps out the children to fight with one of their greatest fears and to come out in flying colors reaping success in defeating them.
JEEVANIYAM provides a stage and ground for the same and the impressions of these have been engraved deep in hearts of each and every satisfied patient. We work for a transformation from being contempt to being content.
