Sensory Integration Therapy For Your Special Kids

Sensory integration therapy is one of the important clinical approaches to treat disorders related to sensory integration. An occupational therapist or physical therapist can perform this therapy to the patients by the use of certain sensory and motor skill exercises. Sensory integration therapy is a collection of games that can help children to better use and process their sensory information.

Sensory integration therapy is highly useful for the children who need an extensive revision of general motor skills such as children affected with autism. Sensory integration therapy includes movement education, gymnastics, and adaptive physical education. A series of education helps a child to respond correctly and appropriately to sensory data. Sensory integration therapy develops customized methods to build memory skills, attention skills, visual processing, auditory processing, processing of logic, reasoning, speed, and comprehension. Sensory integration therapy is consisting of the essential mental skills that are needed to handle sensory integration disorders in certain cases. Strong sensory integration and cognitive skills are highly important to read, spell and to perform other learning abilities in a good manner. Weak sensory integration and cognitive skills often develop many problems in a person behavior.
Sensory integration therapy is good for the children to have problems in sensory integration and weak cognitive skills. Sensory integration therapy helps in immediate assessment of the child and provides long-term solutions. Sensory integration therapy is a complete treatment plan for the affected children in an economical manner. It also saves time and reduces manpower to handle affected children.

Inclusion - Mainstream life, special needs or not

The world around us has all types of people. Some of us may be lucky enough to have a great childhood and have a normal life. But some may have special needs, due to various challenges and learning difficulties. If any of these anomalies exist for any kid, is the kid responsible for it? What is his mistake? Such children are said to be more close to God and are considered as dear ones to him, whom we call as special needs children. Yes, their abilities are quite different from the rest of the people and should be appreciated in the way which is required.

What is Inclusion?

Inclusion is the principle of allowing the differently abled/ special needs children to mingle, study and to be with the normal kids during their learning hours and break time. The concept of inclusion aims to provide the extra considerations that these children need along with the same treatment dished out to normal children, at every stage of growing up. It advocates the avoidance of the special schools in the society and encourages that these children be educated at the regular schools.

The philosophy behind inclusive education is to promote opportunities for all children to participate, learn and have equal treatment, irrespective of their mental or physical abilities.

Children with special needs may have mild learning disabilities or profound cognitive impairment. Some parents will always mourn their child's lost potential, and some other families may find that their child's challenges make triumphs sweeter and that weaknesses are often accompanied by amazing strengths.

Embracing strengths to uncover true potential

Inclusion is more than an educational system for the special children. It is an exposure to them. It is a chance for them to interact with the world which is unfamiliar to them. All of us know of parents who have had to struggle with school managements for admissions because of the special needs of their children. Many have had to put their life on hold because of the lack of co-operation of the educational system.

Inclusion needs a lot of requirements if it has to be successful. It includes having a balanced curriculum that is appropriate for all categories of children, teachers who have the ability to handle the individual needs within the classroom and thereby promote an environment where personal development, social skills and student participation are strongly recommended. Participation is the key to academic inclusion and we have to ensure that the participation of the children with special needs in all mainstream activities happens to the best of their abilities.

Learning by example

The settings of a regular classroom and the students can help the children with special needs develop social skills as well. Children are known to learn and reproduce whatever they see in front of their eyes. Learn by example is their psychological characteristic. So, for those special children, there lies better examples in front of them for the right behavior, character etc.
Inclusion helps them to get together with the world. It helps them make better, strong, friendships which can shape their lives. This kind of support also aids in the progress of special children and helps them gain confidence within the school environment.

Inclusion in India

Special children have the right to education and to mingle with the society. In India, a majority of children with special needs do not receive any formal education, in spite of the practice of inclusive education in some schools. This is because children with disabilities and learning deficiencies are segregated from mainstream schools and other regular routines and social activities of normal children. The unwillingness to accept them as who they are is the major issue that is concerned with the upbringing of the children with special needs.

The society doesn’t feel that it is a social responsibility to up bring them and help them have a bright future so as to attain the social equality and overall social progress. Instead they consider it as the sole responsibility of the parents. This thought has to be changed as it is no more than contributing to the decay of our social roots.

If we could give them a chance, what’s to say that another scientist like Einstein or a wonderful artist or an eminent entrepreneur comes out? It Come, it is time to change the traditional thoughts and to break the usual. Let us build a safer, secure world for our brothers and sisters too….

Cerebral Palsy is a disorder that affects the muscle tone, movement, and motor skills of a child. Cerebral Palsy is also abbreviated as CP and it can also affect other systems of the body in time. Cerebral Palsy as the name renounces, affects the brain and the development of brain. As the development of brain is affected, it may seriously harm other parts of the body, and its development. For example, it can make the child blind, deaf, physically or mentally challenged etc. Population-based studies from around the world report that estimated cases of CP range from 1.5 to more than 4 per 1,000 live births or children of a defined age range.
The first and foremost reason for a child to be affected by cerebral palsy is the delayed cry of the child. As per medical science, the first cry of the baby is very important because, it is this cry that makes the baby take his/her first breath. It takes in oxygen and it reaches the baby’s brain after dissolving in the blood. Baby’s brain development is wholly dependent on this oxygen that reaches through blood by the first cry. So if there occurs a delay in the cry of the baby, it can seriously affect brain development which ultimately leads to the condition of cerebral palsy. It can also occur due to the malnutrition, injury and disease which can occur during the conception time of the mother.

The muscle impairment can be considered as one of the most important signs of cerebral palsy. Along with it, loss of control, balance and coordination over the refluxes can also worsen the condition of the child. The child may also develop a difficulty in swallowing and chewing indicating oral dysfunction. Speech impairment and poor facial muscle tone can also indicate Cerebral Palsy.
Certain abnormal reflexes may also indicate Cerebral Palsy. Hyperreflexia are excessive reflex responses that cause twitching and spasticity. Underdeveloped or lacking postural and protective reflexes are warning signs for abnormal development, including Cerebral Palsy.
Many signs and symptoms are not readily visible at birth, except in some severe cases, and may appear within the first three to five years of life as the brain and child develop.

Ayurveda has been considered not only as a way of treatment but also a style of life too. It is a part of our heritage and culture marking the legacy. Ayurveda in itself has the answer for many problems and we need not wander for the right solutions needed for each issue. Even diseases like cerebral palsy can be treated effectively by the right combinations of the treatment methodologies and the right ratio of the medicines which could be found out only after tedious efforts of researches and findings of years.
In this regard, we Jeevaniyam Ayurveda hospital and research center provide you with the best treatment methodologies for one of the most serious conditions among children-cerebral palsy. Our treatment methodologies are based upon the research results conducted by the Department of pediatrics of Kottakkal Ayurveda College. Cerebral palsy being one of most challenging conditions too has to be handled with utmost care and could be done with the expert panel of doctors of years of experience and the researchers of utmost knowledge.
Ayurveda finds the method of resolving cerebral palsy with the ultimate aim of Neuronal plasticity. Neuro plasticity is the brain's ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections throughout life. Neuroplasticity allows the neurons (nerve cells) in the brain to compensate for injury and disease and to adjust their activities in response to new situations or to changes in their environment. So that, in spite of the damaged nerve cells, brain manages itself to acclimatize with the existing neurons and control and coordinate life activities with them.
The unique treatment methodology of Jeevaniyam for Cerebral palsy includes two important treatments. ”Rookshana” and “Snehana”. The treatment is a 14 day treatment which is done at a gap of 6 months. Rookshana and Snehana find its best application in sorting out a way to help the children suffering from cerebral palsy. Rookshana and Snehana aim at the final result of Neuroplasticity. These both treatments when provided in right combination can bring out wonders which have proven to be true. The treatment method includes different types of nasyas, medicated oil massages for both head and body.
Along with the special treatment methods for Cerebral Palsy, other sessions included are physiotherapy, speech therapy etc. These therapies promise better physical fitness when combined with the treatment methodologies for Cerebral Palsy.
Jeevaniyam provides not only the treatment, but also we provide education to children on a regular school basis on Monday to Friday from morning till noon as a 10 months package. This interactive, cognitive session helps the children to cope up with the society and to have a normal life as all other children of their age. In order to help children have a regular life and to face the harsh reality, these educational sessions help them to a real extend.
Children are gifts of God. But at times, they may not be complete. But as per the believes, children with small shortcomings stand very near to God and are real replicas of God itself. With today’s innovative neo methodologies, cerebral palsy is no more to be feared, instead faced with much strength. As far as we are there to help, nothing’s there to fear!

Melodious Music Therapy To Enhance Skills Among ASD Kids

Autism is a complex disability that affects verbal, cognitive and social abilities of children. It can be generally noticed within three years from child birth.

What is music therapy?
This therapy uses music and makes interactions between the children and teachers to impart specific skill sets. For ASD children music therapy supports the kids with interactive musical activities to improve communication and social skills.
Music is a special medium that enriches happiness among all. Music therapy helps to reduce the emotional stress, enhance memory, and improves communication. The intervention of music among autistic children improves the social behaviour, increases attention, improves communication attempts, improves body awareness, coordination and reduces anxiety, all these has been proved by clinical study and research by Journal of Music Therapy in 2004. The children and adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) respond well to music.

The idea behind music therapy:
The autistic children can communicate with musical activities such as playing instruments, songwriting, singing and listening to music instead of using words for communication. The therapist uses musical activities to teach new skills to the kids. A music therapist might write lyrics on specific behaviour for an autistic child. Even the therapists can sing the lyrics to the well-known melody of the songs to the kids. The child will be able to grasp the information sung in the song than spoken information.
Music therapy generally involves the following stages:
Assessment: First of all the therapist assesses an autistic child to find the need. Music therapy is often used along with other ASD therapies so that the therapist might consult the child’s doctor or other therapists.
Goal-setting: This is an individualized program based on a child’s need.
Activities: The activities are designed in such a way to meet a child’s individual needs. These could include singing, working in groups, improvising, songwriting etc.,
Evaluation: To ensure the program response, it has been regularly evaluated.

Jeevaniyam Ayurveda Hospital & Research Centre offers cosmic services to the special kids with autism and other disabilities. Our music therapy clinically showed many improvements among special kids.

Why is integrated therapy preferred for intellectual disability ?

An Intellectual Disability represents a person has some restrictions in the mental function and skills such as communications, taking care of self and social skills. The barricades limit the children development and learning ability more slowly than a normal child.

The intellectual disabilities of children (cognitive, mental retardation) may take longer time to learn to walk, speak or taking care of their personal needs. They will have trouble in school learning. Though they will learn it takes a long time than others. Some children may have the disability in learning. Some children with intellectual disabilities will have difficulty in interpretation, integration, and coordinating sensory input. Sensory integration activities help them to strengthen these abilities.
There are two kinds of sensory problems. Some kids will be hyperactive and they avoid activities like climbing stairs. They are commonly prone to mobility problem. They need others support for walking.

Some will be hypoactive and they have decreased sensory system. They may enjoy climbing and swinging but will never turn up with dizziness or spinning. Sensory integration activities deal with the children's sensory needs by either lessening or amplifying the sensory stimulation intensity they receive. Most sensory integration activities are related with children's vestibular, proprioceptive, and tactile sensory systems.

The following therapies might help the Intellectually Disable Children to come out their problematic ring.

Occupational therapy: Occupational therapy practitioners help the people by promoting their health and live the life better with Disability, Injury and illness. It helps the disable children to participate in school and social situations, helping people to recover from injury, providing support for adults who experience cognitive and physical changes.

Speech therapy: When a child has articulation problem, the speech therapy is provided which improves receptive and expressive language skills, communication skills, and vocabulary. The fear and the problem for a child in speaking are solved with this speech therapy.

Physical therapy: Some children will have locomotive disorders whom this physical therapy boost self-locomotion and mobility. It provides adaptive solutions to mobility issues and increases sensory integration.

Orthomolecular therapy: A good diet with supplements boosts the natural health. Some people with intellectual disability will be poor in the diet. Orthomolecular therapy maintains the vitamins and minerals in this disability. Cognitive disorders are improved by with the help of nutritional supplements “molecular balance”.

Talk therapy: Psychotherapy is otherwise called Talk therapy which is useful to treat psychiatric disorders. However, it cannot cure or treat disabilities. Few Intellectual disabled children will have mild depression that can be successfully treated with psychotherapy.

Some intellectually disabled personalities need a mix of all therapies whereas some need either one or two. The doctor only confirms the patient with therapy which he/she needs.

Jeevaniyam Ayurveda Hospital and Research Center, Kerala with a team of dedicated medicos and staffs provide Therapies for All Intellectual Disabilities. We not only care special children but also train their parents as for how the children should behave in the home and social atmosphere.
